"Shura Cherkassky (1909-1995) was one of the greatest piano virtuosos of his time having studied under the legendary Josef Hofmann. This WDR studio broadcast sourced from the original master tapes has Cherkassky playing Rachmaninov's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini from 1970 in superb stereo. He recorded the Rhapsody only once in 1953 for EMI in mono but it has never been issued on CD so this taping is exceptionally important and adds a major work to Cherkassky's large discography. Prokofiev's wartime Piano Sonata No.7 was never recorded commercially by Cherkassky so this is another addition to his discography sourced from WDR's original master tapes. It was recorded in 1951 when Cherkassky was fast becoming a star in Germany. The three scenes from Stravinsky's Petruschka was a favourite virtuoso work for Cherkassky and this 1951 recording shows him at his most brilliant, sourced from WDR's original master tapes. Three encores have been added from 1951 and 1953 (not sourced from WDR) which again showcase Cherkassky's incredible technique during the early period of his career in Germany."

"Cherkassky had such catholic tastes in music that a mixed recital by him probably conveyed more sense of sheer enjoyment of their variety than any other virtuoso's did. This time the variety has been supplied by his editors and producers, but the exuberance remains. Not that it is all whoopee by any means. The two biggest items here, the Paganini Rhapsody and the Prokofiev 7th sonata, are given deep and searching performances that contrast strikingly with the famous accounts that I have selected for comparison. For the Paganini Rhapsody I have had the pleasure of reacquainting myself with my beloved Rubinstein reading on a 1969 LP: in the Prokofiev 7th no comparison less exalted than Richter would do. It will probably take quite a while before my impressions settle down, supposing they ever do, but after three or four hearings my own reactions are taking even me aback. It might surprise you, whether in an agreeable sense or otherwise, but there are excellent reasons for preferring Cherkassky.

It may be that all the works here are new releases (the liner note is not completely clear on this point) but certainly most of them are. The Paganini Rhapsody dates from 1970, the other pieces from 1951 or 1953. The recordings are `sourced from the original master tapes' to quote from the back of the box, the quality is strikingly good in all the shorter works (including the Petrushka selection), and given the early date I hope this means that those original tapes were high-quality and not that the sound has been cleverly manipulated. Dates for the comparison performances are compatible with Cherkassky's - Rubinstein's Rachmaninov from 1969 and the Richter reading that I have used in the Prokofiev being a live performance from Moscow in 1958. In the Rhapsody Rubinstein is given the better recording. Cherkassky's is not bad, but the solo is too close-in, a besetting sin of concerto recording around that date. The difference in the recordings amplifies the difference in the two maestros' approaches. Rubinstein's account is youthful and exuberant (good heavens, he was probably not even 80), Cherkassky's has a higher `specific gravity' if that conveys what I am trying to say. Tempi are in general a bit slower than Rubinstein's, but the whole impression is more serious and `Russian'. The famous variation 18 provides the most marked contrast between the two, Rubinstein singing his heart out and Cherkassky slow, pensive and too deep for tears.

Richter's performance of the Prokofiev 7th sonata has, of course, the composer's own stamp of approval. I have reviewed it here and the favourable rating that I gave it was not because I had been led to (or I sincerely hope not) but because it is obviously top-class. I don't retract a word of that, but it is only honest to say that I find myself liking Cherkassky better and unable to make myself think otherwise. It does not do to play them back-to-back, because doing that makes Richter sound as if he has a train to catch in the first movement. His timing in this movement is a full two minutes faster than Cherkassky's, which is a saving of more than 20% in a comparatively short movement, and Cherkasskly is more measured and less hectic. There is less to choose between them in the slow central movement, and actually Cherkassky is very slightly faster here, although that was not what I would have thought without checking. Richter again goes harder at the finale, and of course he can still build up a climax at the end, but Cherkassky's cool and calculated approach to that is what gives him my vote.

The word is `cool', I think. I have an LP of Cherkassky with the Grieg and Schumann concertos in their familiar combination. Cherkassky manages to be my favourite in both (quite an achievement given the field), and it was the cool poise that did it for me. However I started this review by saying that his tastes were inclusive, and coolness is only one of the characteristics he shows in the remaining items here. The three Petrushka numbers are superb - poised again when required but uninhibited with it. Full marks for the selection of out-of-the-way shorter items by Rachmaninov, Rameau/Godowsky and Chabrier to complete the disc, and even fuller marks for the way they are played. Cherkassky was a formidable virtuoso even on his `80th' birthday recital, given when he was 82, but here we have him at the height of his proficiency.

It is a pleasure to thank the author of the liner note Alan Thorpe Albeson, whose reviews elsewhere of my revered Cziffra have long kept him in my good books, even if this fairly short note had not been as thoughtful as it is. Indeed I see that liner-writing has not deprived us of a review from him of this very disc on the UK forum.

Cherkassky was probably a bit of a wild card for the `play safe and observe all repeats' school that beset musical criticism and comment for much of my life. What he really amounted to is something I hope I may have enough years to assess properly, but whether I do or not I am going to enjoy the attempt.
